What is Vetivert Essential Oil?

Vetivert essential oil is one of the most effective oils used in aromatherapy for deep relaxation and tranquility.  It is used for its sleep inducing effect, particularly when combined with other essential oils and base ingredients to which Vetivert has a natural affinity.

Vetivert (Vetiveria zizanioides) is commonly grown in Indonesia, Haiti and Java. Essential oil is extracted from the plant’s roots through steam distillation.  As with some vintage wines, unlike many essential oils, Vetivert improves with age rather than deteriorating.

What Does It Smell Like?

Vetivert has a more potent smell by comparison to many other essential oils and is characterised by its deep, smoky and earthy fragrance.

What Is It Good For?

Vetivert has quite a compelling, pungent aroma which can affect people deeply.  It is very good for someone who suffers physical and emotional exhaustion and cannot switch off.  It is very grounding and comforting, helping to soothe irritability, and instill peace and tranquility. Recommended at night time, it is a known sedative, so can be particularly beneficial for insomnia sufferers. It works to moisturize and nourish the skin, and helps to increase the strength of the immune system.

Vetivert is one of few essential oils known to sedate. Combined in products for spa treatments, such a massage oil, and homecare, such as a bath & shower oil, it is one of the best essential oils for inducing peace and tranquility and thereby helping those with sleep difficulties and stressful lives.

Who Is It Good For?

Vetivert is not indicated to cause any side effects, since it is non-toxic, non-irritant and generally non-sensitizing, but the quality and concentration of the essential oil can have an effect, so it is recommended that you consult an expert before using this oil within any products to ensure suitability. In some blends, the concentration may be too high and not be suitable for pregnant women.

How can it be applied?

Used in a vaporizer or an electric burner, or added to a bowl of hot water, Vetivert is effective in filling a room with a sleep-inducing fragrance.

Blended in massage oils or diluted in a bath & shower oil, Vetivert essential oil can primarily assist with calming an overactive mind, relieving symptoms of stress and exhaustion, soothing irritability and instilling peace and tranquillity.

Information provided by Geraldine Howard, President of Aromatherapy Associates who use only 100% natural plant oils with no added colour or synthetic preservatives and no animal extracts in their products. The ingredients found in the essential oils are organically grown and each product contains no less than 30% essential oils.
