Feng Shui WorkZZZ

04 April 2007

Getting a decent night's kip has become big business; essential oils, hot milk drinks, herbal formulas, eyepads... Everyone is selling something to promise you more shut-eye.

But are we overlooking the obvious? Could the Feng Shui layout of your bedroom provide the missing link in the range of insomnia cures?

Sarah McAllister, director of Feng Shui Agency, explains “The Chue style Feng Shui I practice is unique in that it diagnoses ‘active’ and ‘quiet’ zones in your space. By placing your bed in a quiet area, facing a good direction, you are better aligned to enjoy uninterrupted sleep.”

But I can’t move my bed anywhere else! I hear you cry - even if you cannot move the bed to another position in the room you can almost always move the bed a few degrees to align to directions that are more powerful for you. Think Keanu Reeves dodging bullets in The Matrix – a few degrees can make the world of difference!

Sarah’s clients have not only reported better sleep and increased energy levels, but also seen a reduction in the nocturnal wanderings of their children!

Sarah adds “The earth is a magnetic force field which is in constant flux and is influenced by the planetary system. A house which is orientated with its front in the North and its back in the South is going to be ‘holding’ different energy fluxes to one which is aligned East West. The energizing effect of dawn in the East is tangibly different from the softer dreamier feel of sunset in the West.”

A building holds a ‘matrix of energy’ known to the Chinese as chi and occupants absorb this particular type of life force and are affected by it, consciously or not. Feng Shui seeks to make a series of connections – rather like an electrical circuit – to make the chi force flow better and to increase the likelihood of certain outcomes. The energy pattern of wealth has a distinctly different chi combination to the energy that supports health, for instance. Certain directions contain different combinations of energy – so the design of the building greatly affects the lives of the people living or working inside it.

Even architects just ‘know’ when a building doesn't feel right and are starting to take Feng Shui more seriously, recognising that it can add a vital dimension to their design principles.

Michael Warden, also a Chue style practitioner, tells of a client who had been sick for three years, exactly the same time that she had lived in her current house.

“She was not sleeping and had stomach problems as well as general exhaustion. It turned out that there was an underground stream flowing beneath the bed draining her chi away as she slept. In the South West was a large tree blocking energy related to the stomach. A large stone sculpture precisely placed in the garden countered the blocking effect of the tree. Her stomach condition improved immediately. Shifting her bed to another room got her away from the draining effects of the stream. Within three days she reported sleeping soundly from 10pm until 6pm for the first time since she moved in. This was also aided by facing her bed toward a precise degree which is favourable for her personally.”

If all of this sounds sophisticated, that's because there is five thousands years of evolution behind Feng Shui.
